IRS Updates for 2011

**NEW** -- FUTA Rate Falls July 1, 2011

Before July 1, 2011, the FUTA tax rate is 6.2%. After June 30, 2011, the FUTA tax rate is scheduled to decrease to 6.0%. The tax applies to the first $7,000 you pay to each employee as wages during the year. The $7,000 is the federal wage base. Your state wage base may be different. (Source IRS Pub 15)

Most employers will get a maximum credit of 5.4%, making their FUTA rate for the first two quarters be .8%; the net deposit rate for 3rd qtr 2011 will be .6% (not .8%); and the 2011 Form 940 may have two different FUTA rates. The IRS advises you to track separately Jan.-June and July-Dec 2011.

Change your FUTA rate in your payroll software before running July payrolls. This, of course, only affects new employees or those who have not maxed out ($7,000) the FUTA wage.

The IRS has amended Notice 2010-59 with ruling 2011-5, which describes the new eligibility limitations of over-the-counter (OTC) drugs and medicines for tax-free reimbursement under an employer-sponsored health plan.
